As a way to maximize the investment already made in Digital Classrooms, BCPS will select schools that have demonstrated interest and capacity to join a cohort that will receive instructional design and support. Our goal is that schools in this cohort will become “lighthouse” schools in our district for personalized learning that other schools can visit and emulate.
What is Personalized Learning (PL)? We use the following definition of personalized learning at Broward County:
“Personalized learning is an education model that seeks to accelerate student learning by tailoring the instructional environment- what, when, how, and where students learn – to address the individual needs, skills, and interests of each student. Students take ownership over their own learning while also developing deep, personal connections with each other, their teachers, and other adults.”
Personalized learning at the classroom level includes elements of targeted instruction, flexible content, data-driven decisions, and student reflection and ownership.
See this overview for more details about additional attributes of personalized learning.
What is Personalized Learning (PL) NOT? Personalized learning is not:
How can I learn more? As you determine whether or not to apply to be a Personalized Learning Lighthouse School, consider exploring the following resources to learn more about what personalized learning can look like in your schools.
What is the timeline? The work will begin January 2018. Schools will be on target to launch aspects of personalized learning in May 2018. The district will provide ongoing support through June 2019.
What are the benefits to my school? Over the course of the engagement, lighthouse schools that participate in this cohort will create or receive:
What are the expectations of my school? Your school will be asked to identify Personalized Learning (PL) Leadership Team of 5-7 people (must include the principal; should include mix of admins and teachers). There will be set dates that your PL Leadership Team will be expected to attend. The phases of work include:
Your school’s PL leadership team will participate in the following:
What is the overall time commitment? Estimated time commitment:
|Role / Team||Type||Estimated Time Commitment|
|PL Leadership Team||On-site workshops at central location||3.5 Days|
|PL Leadership Team||Facilitated visits at school site||1.5 Days|
|PL Leadership Team||Logistics coordination to prepare for and follow-up from on-site workshops||4-8 hours|
|PL Leadership Team||Phone support to review readiness assessment reports and design and support plans||2-3 hours|
|PL Leadership Team||Revising design and support plans, and planning and delivery of “turnkey” workshops||8-16 hours|
|Teachers & Staff||Participating in “turnkey” workshops led by PL Leadership Team||6-12 hours|
Note that this estimated time commitment does not include ongoing support of your personalized learning efforts, such as school-specific professional development, observations, and coaching. Our hope is that the personalized learning training and resource you receive through this cohort will become embedded in your school’s instructional supports and professional development.
